RFID research at the ESL is supported by a partnership with the Wistron NeWeb Corporation. This partnership aims to advance RFID technology growth.
ESL's RFID research goals:
- Develop new reader antennas
- Develop new item tag antennas
- Develop propagation models and create enhanced solutions
- Develop complete system models
- Verify new designs with real-world measurements
Some challenges involved:
- RFID is a backscatter system.
- Transmit power and bandwidth is very limited.
- Fading is a major problem.
- Item tag antennas are buried among other packages and their associated contents.
- Design RFID test facilities and measurement procedures that represent real-world situations.
