RFID

RFID research at the ESL is supported by a partnership with the Wistron NeWeb Corporation. This partnership aims to advance RFID technology growth.

ESL's RFID research goals:

  • Develop new reader antennas
  • Develop new item tag antennas
  • Develop propagation models and create enhanced solutions
  • Develop complete system models
  • Verify new designs with real-world measurements

Some challenges involved:

  • RFID is a backscatter system.
  • Transmit power and bandwidth is very limited.
  • Fading is a major problem.
  • Item tag antennas are buried among other packages and their associated contents.
  • Design RFID test facilities and measurement procedures that represent real-world situations.
