John Volakis, Chope Chair professor and director of the ElectroScience Laboratory, received the 2011 Chen-To Tai Distinguished Educator Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. Volakis was recognized for "exemplary contributions as an inspiring teacher and mentor, and for advancing electromagnetic technology."

The Chen-To Tai award, which was established in the year 2000, recognizes an outstanding educator who has made exceptional contributions to the field of antennas and propagation through teaching, research, and the direction of graduate students. The award was presented at the 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation, July 3-8, 2011, in Spokane, Washington.

Volakis returned to The Ohio State University in 2003 after completing his MS and PhD degrees here in 1979 and 1982, respectively. His research interests are in antennas, computational methods, novel radio frequency materials, multi-physics engineering, electromagnetic compatibility and interference, and bioelectromagnetics.

Volakis is the author or co-author of six books, 305 articles in major refereed journals, more than 500 conference papers and 23 book chapters. He has mentored nearly 70 PhD students and post-docs with 16 of them having co-authored papers that won awards at international conferences.

Volakis has been recognized by numerous technical awards throughout his career and has held several leadership positions, including president of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society in 2004. He is listed by ISI among the top 250 most referenced authors. Volakis is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACES, and currently serves on the IEEE Fellow Evaluating Committee.
