There was a lot to celebrate within the ESL community this week with both the start of the autumn semester and the news of ElectroScience Laboratory team member Michelle Diefenbach earning the 2020 Outstanding Service Above and Beyond Award.

Presented by the Engineering Staff Advisory Committee (ESAC), the Above and Beyond awards are a mechanism for employees to be recognized for their outstanding performance in support of the college’s mission and university core values as they carry out their duties. Diefenbach was bestowed the 2020 Outstanding Service Above and Beyond Award for her efforts.

Diefenbach serves as the assistant to ESL Director Richard Ridgway. In her role, she supports students, faculty, researchers, alumni, affiliated organizations, and fellow staff members at the ElectroScience Laboratory.

Her nomination included a host of statements from those impacted by Diefenbach’s work, including the following:

"Michelle is an extremely valuable asset for the ElectroScience Laboratory and the College of Engineering in general. Michelle supports all activities required of the Director and Associate Director, and she facilitates day-to-day operations within ESL. She is the “hub” of ESL, the go-to person if anyone needs information about the lab, the college, or the university. She is a highly professional, highly skilled administrator who knows everything that is going on at all levels of the lab, from operations staff, to student recruitment, to faculty research, to lab administration."

Traditionally, awards are announced at the college’s annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon, which was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the ESL community still took the time to gather virtually during a coffee break to celebrate Diefenbach’s accomplishment.

  • Exemplary Support or Advancement of Research Award: Amy Dudley
  • Outstanding Service to Students Award: Melanie Senitko
  • Superior Safety Award: Andrew Kauffman
  • Exemplary Team Performance Award: The OSU Flight Education Leadership Team; Brandon Mann, Joe Schwerdtfeger, Candi Roby, Heather Backus, Kate Savard and Josh Maihle
