ESL Graduate Research Associate among 2020 Autumn Presidential Fellows
Beyond the power grids, the computer parts, and past the embedded systems, the core of electrical engineering lies at its most obscure and natural.
It’s precisely for his work in this field that earned Vigyanshu Mishra, a graduate research associate at the ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL) and student within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), a place among The Ohio State University Graduate School autumn 2020 Presidential Fellows.
Considered the most prestigious award given to graduate students, it recognizes the outstanding scholarly accomplishments and potential of Ohio State students entering the final phase of their dissertation research or terminal degree project.
Mishra said choosing electrical and computer engineering as a career path was a natural choice for him.
“I have always been fascinated by the science of the ‘invisible,’ and how humans can understand and apply that science to create engineering marvels,” he said. “ECE clearly deals with several such aspects that were of interest to me.”
Mishra is a doctoral candidate at ESL, advised by Assistant Professor Asimina Kiourti. His dissertation research involves developing smart, functionalized, and wearable garments enabling seamless motion capture in a natural environment and extremely low-loss and low-power wireless connectivity with other wearable sensors or smartphones. He said applications include healthcare, sports, and virtual reality.
Originally from India, Mishra said Ohio State was his choice to pursue a Ph.D. because of ESL and the opportunity to work with Kiourti.
“I am thankful to my advisor, Prof. Asimina Kiourti, for being such a great mentor. I always learn a lot from her. The ElectroScience Lab is known across the world for its electromagnetics research, and my advisor is well known in the area of bio-electromagnetics,” he said. “I have a strong fascination for electromagnetics, ever since I was introduced with the subject, and I wanted to apply it to the biomedical field.”
After graduation, Mishra plans to continue as a postdoctoral researcher and then join academia.
He previously earned his Bachelor of Technology from PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur, India in Electronics and Communication Engineering, and his Master of Technology from IIT Delhi, India in Radio Frequency Design and Technology.
“Throughout my academic life, I have always been fortunate to be mentored and taught by great teachers and professors, including here at The Ohio State University, for which I am always grateful,” Mishra said.
In his free time, he enjoys meditation and yoga as part of Ohio State’s SKY@OSU student organization, which promotes mental health on campus.
