Dr. Asimina Kiourti, an assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering at The Ohio State University, has been named to the prestigious Columbus Business First 40 Under 40 list for 2021. The program recognizes individuals under the age of 40 who are making great strides in shaping the future of Central Ohio.

40 Under 40 is the longest-running awards program at Columbus Business First. The competitive selection process included a record number of applications this year, with more than 250 submissions backed by letters of support from esteemed colleagues and collaborators.

At the ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL), Kiourti’s team carries out interdisciplinary research at the intersection of bio-electromagnetics, wearable and implantable antennas, sensors for body area applications, and flexible textile-based electronics. She works closely with collaborators from Ohio State’s College of Engineering, College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Veterinary Medicine.

“A lot of my research is bridging two worlds — typically that’s medicine and engineering,” Kiourti previously shared. “We’re designing new sensors from scratch, which can take years for us to develop fully. On the other side, clinicians need a sensor right now to start collecting data. You have to find the sweet spot between the two.”

A native of Greece, Kiourti is known as a pioneer in the field of electromagnetics. She has garnered international recognition for her work,  including the 2018 International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Young Scientist Award. Her publication record has amassed more than 10 patents, 50 journal papers, and 80 conference papers.

Kiourti joined Ohio State’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an assistant professor in fall 2016. From 2013 to 2016, she served as a postdoctoral researcher and then a senior research associate at ESL. Before that, she received her Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 2013 and her Master of Science degree from University College London, England, in 2009.

Columbus Business First will host a virtual celebration on May 27 and designate a section of its May 28 issue to recognize award recipients. To learn more about the 2021 40 Under 40 class, visit https://go.osu.edu/cbf_40under40
