Medical Sensing and Bio Electromagnetics

MRI machine

Electromagnetic energy is used extensively for many biomedical applications including:

  • Imaging
  • Electrical stimulation of the heart, brain, and other tissues
  • Hyperthermia
  • Sensing

ESL researchers are currently:

  • Studying the microwave aspects of high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electron paramagnetic
  • Resonance (EPR) imaging in conjunction with researchers in the Ohio State College of Medicine. The resonators for these devices are designed with the aid of numerical simulations and finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations.

  • Developing game-changing: (a) wireless and fully-passive implants for continuous and unobtrusive monitoring of brain signals with minimum impact to the individual’s activity, and (b) non-invasive and inconspicuous epidermal textile sensors for real-time monitoring of internal organs deep into the body in a carefree manner.
