ElectroScience Laboratory Director and Chope Chair Professor of Engineering, Professor John Volakis is recently named among the 2016 Distinguished Scholars. As a child, Volakis grew up with no electricity on a farm in Greece, which ultimately led to his fascination with the study of electrical engineering. Today, his research in wireless communications, antennas and arrays, medical sensing, electromagnetics and radio frequencies is respected internationally.

Each year, through the Distinguished Scholar Award program, the university recognizes and honors six faculty members who demonstrate scholarly activity, research or other creative works which represent exceptional achievements in their fields. Recipients of the award receive a $20,000 research grant and a $3,000 honorarium to pursue their scholarly activity.
